How to Use the Chakras in Everyday Life: Root

Welcome to the first chakra in our series! The root chakra (Muladhara in Sanskrit) is the foundation for the rest. It allows us to make living our everyday lives easier. Here’s how below!

The root chakra is located at the base of our spine and is associated with the color red and our digestive tract. It is in charge of our physical experiences/needs such as food, shelter, and water. It regulates mental needs such as trust, security, survival, and our instincts.

It is important to balance our root chakra because it is the anchor/foundation of the higher chakras. When our root chakra falls out of balance, it may cause more difficulty connecting to the outer world.


Signs of Imbalance

Here are signs that your root chakra may be imbalanced:

  • Money Obsession/Materialism
  • Mistrust of others
  • Difficulty being yourself around others
  • Feeling anxious/ungrounded throughout the day
  • Binge-eating/Starving self
  • Anger/Short Temper/Impatience/Arrogance
  • Fear
  • Feeling stuck
  • Lack of confidence

Balancing the Root Chakra

If you do these practices everyday (or as often as possible), you will feel more grounded and whole within yourself and the world around you.

Chanting/Meditationrootchakra

Chanting the root chakras mantra “LAM” while placing this mudra (a symbolic hand gesture) above your knees with deep breaths.

Meditating while envisioning the color red at the base of your spine brightening with each breath.

FoodsR O O T

Eating red/root growing foods such as: beets, tomatoes, raspberries, pomegranate, strawberries, cherries, potatoes, and radish 

Essential Oils

Aromatherapy comes a long way. Oils such as Sandalwood, Rosewood, Rosemary, Frankincense, and Myrrh have grounding smells.

Activities

Walk barefoot on grass-Go to the woods-Take deep breaths-Envision the color red at the base of your spine-Stretch your body every morning/before you go to sleep

Affirmations

Affirmations can be spoken out loud or silently in your mind. Affirmations are charged when you state them several times while feeling that what is stated is true. 

I am grounded

I trust life

I trust myself

I feel safe and secure

I am confident

I am wealthy

I am protected

I am abundant


The root chakra allows us to be firm and grounded within the physical plane. With a balanced root chakra, the mind will shift from a surviving state to a thriving state.
